May 16, 1943 - August 1, 2026
Yung Woo Suh, aged 83, passed away peacefully at his residence on August 1, 2026, in Montreal, Quebec, the city and community he warmly called home for over 40 years.
Born on May 16, 1943, in Daegu, South Korea, Yung Woo was the son of the late Hee Kyun Suh and Bok Kyung Hong. Raised in South Korea during a transformative era, he pursued his education at the prestigious Yonsei University, graduating with a degree in business, a field that would define the early chapter of a remarkable and visionary career.
Yung Woo was a true pioneer of South Korea's retail and corporate landscape, playing a foundational role in the economic growth of the 1970s and 1980s. Over his distinguished career in Korea, he held numerous influential positions, including key roles with Samsung and helping establish Korea's very first department store.
It was during his early career at Samsung that he met the love of his life, Jung Min Suh, who initially started as his senior at the company. Their partnership grew into a devoted, loving marriage of 51 years built on mutual respect, shared ambition, and deep family devotion.
In 1986, driven by a father's desire to provide greater opportunities for his three daughters, Yung Woo immigrated with his family to Montreal, Canada. There, he embraced a new chapter with open arms. For 17 years, he was a beloved presence at his flower shop Jardin Alex in downtown Montreal, where he is warmly remembered wearing his apron and sharing a bright, welcoming smile with everyone who walked through the doors. Giving back to his community was central to who he was, leading him to volunteer for over a decade as a translator at the Montreal Children's Hospital, offering comfort and communication to families in need.
Beyond his work and service, Yung Woo possessed a profound lifelong curiosity about the world. A dedicated philatelist, he spent over 60 years building an extraordinary Korean stamp collection. He held a deep passion for history, geography, and culture, endlessly exploring museums and always eagerly planning the family's next travel adventure. He was also an avid angler who found peace in fishing.
Yung Woo is survived by his beloved wife, Jung Min Suh; his three daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer Hay Jin Suh & Richard William Cho, Helen Hay Min Suh & Dong Won Seo, and Sandra Hay Kyung Suh & Henry Hyun Chul Chung; and his four cherished grandchildren, Sophie Yoonseo Cho, James Jinseo Cho, Jayden Taesu Chung, and Gia Seo. He is also remembered by his three siblings, Myeong Ok, Kwang Ok and Jin Hyun; and a wide circle of extended family, friends, and community members.
A man of vision, immense kindness, quiet strength, and faith in God, Yung Woo leaves behind a proud legacy of devotion, curiosity, and unconditional love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
