Alex (Mychail Olek) Gyba

1956-2025
Passed away on January 18, 2025 at the age of 68 after a long and bravely fought battle with cancer.  For almost 45 years he was the beloved husband of Mary Anne (Lashchuk).
He was the devoted Tato to his children Stephen and Simon (Alyson Cadney) and loving Dido to his precious little granddaughters Ella and Lily.  He was predeceased by his parents, Iwan and Anna (Kuzma) and his parents-in-law Stephen and Nancy (Onyshkewych).  He was the youngest brother of Stephanie (Roman Karpishka), the late Zenon (Maria Michalyk) and Wasyl (Ursula Tomczak).  He leaves to mourn his many nieces and nephews, Roman Karpishka Jr. (Betty), Michael Karpishka (Gabby), the “Gyba Girls” Christina (Paul), Irene (John), Kathryn (Alex) and Andrew Gyba (Monique), Matthew Gyba (Sarah), and their families, his supportive sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Allen Phillips, his cousins in Montreal and across Canada and his countless friends.

Alex was born in Lachine, QC on June 11, 1956.  He was a proud Ukrainian and was active in the community for most of his life.  His love of singing started at an early age through his participation in the St. Basil the Great Church Choir.  Later, with his wife, he joined the Vidlunnya Ukrainian Choir where, for 20 years, his booming bass voice could be heard.  Alex was best-known for his work as a Graphic Artist.  He was very proud of the work he did for the Montreal Ukrainian Festival and his stylized ‘Vinok’ logo has been featured prominently for years.  His unique style was unmistakable and he never refused a request from anyone in the Ukrainian community to help promote their event with his creative artwork.

In May 2020 Alex was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer.  Throughout his illness he received excellent, compassionate treatment at the Lakeshore General Hospital from the doctors, technicians, nurses and préposés in many departments as well as in Day Medicine, from Andrea Cox and the Palliative Care team, from CLSC nurse Julie and from far too many others to mention by name.  The wonderful, supportive staff in the Oncology Department always made him feel safe and hopeful.  Sincere thanks are extended to the entire team, most notably to Dr. Buhlaiga, Dr. Meti, Lisa Marie, Andrea Cooke, Kim, Chun Lan, Heather and especially Elisa Leo, whose professionalism, good humour, support and outstanding care will never be forgotten.

Visitation will take place at Yves Légaré Funeral Complex on Friday February 7, 2025 from 2:00-5:00 PM and from 7:00-9:00 PM with a Panachyda at 7:30 PM.  Funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday February 8, 2025 at 10:30 AM.  Cremation and interment will take place in a private family ceremony at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation or St. Andrij the Apostle Parish will be gratefully appreciated.  May he rest in peace.  ETERNAL MEMORY - Вічная Памʼять.
