I didn’t know my father well as he was simply the man who came and went. I don’t have many memories of him as we didn’t see him much. When I was in kindergarten I remember him doing a handstand and travelling across the living room on his hands with coins falling out of his pockets. I would love collecting the coins every time! I loved gift wrapping items for customers at the Hallmark Card & Gift Shop my parents owned in Florida. I remember him often times visiting the lady who worked at the men’s clothing store in the same mall. I remember going to Walt Disney World as a family, walking with my mother and my brother and looking back at my father, who always walked what seemed like 20 feet behind us. I remember wondering why but not able to make sense of it. He could have a very short temper which was frightening. I remember when he smashed my K-Tel Goofy Greats record and one of my brother’s Big Jim toys. As I got older and started babysitting, I remember coming home often times after midnight and my father wasn’t home. We only spoke a few times over a span of many years. After my brother and I started our own families, he started contacting us more often and sending gifts for the children that he had purchased at garage sales. It was apparent that he was hoping to reconnect with us. When asked, he would not admit to having any regrets regarding the lost years. I knew he did. As an adult, I discovered that my father was a positive person, so much so that it was contagious and uplifting. Interestingly, he was extremely supportive of me as I was going through a separation from my husband. He had a fantastic sense of humour and loved to tell jokes. The last joke I heard him tell was when he was living in the residence on Nun’s Island; as we were walking down the hallway, we crossed paths with another resident, a lovely lady who was wearing a nice sweater. He said, “Bonjour Madame, j’aime votre chandail… ça me fais penser à une question, savez-vous ce qui pousse dans un chandail?”… ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Nos condoléances, plus particulièrement à Marc Antoine, Diane et Serge.
Toutes mes condoléances à la famille et amis!
