It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Grazia Capozzo (Matteo), who left us on January 18, 2024 at the age of 96 while in the comfort and peace of her retirement residence surrounded by her children. Grazia was the beloved wife of Donato Matteo (predeceased), cherished and devoted mother of Rosa (Albino, predeceased), Luigi (Antonella) and Loretta (Tony). She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: Cynthia (Jay), Joseph (Georgia), Melissa, Daniel, Justin and Luca and her great grandchildren Ben, Maria and Luke. She will be forever remembered by her brother Sam (Nancy), Donato, predeceased (Lydia), and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Grazia was born in Molinara, Italy on December 9th 1927. It is a small town in the Province of Benevento in the Italian region Campania. She immigrated to Canada in January of 1952 where she was reunited with her fiance and future husband Donato. Grazia's uncle Antonio (Zi Tony) and Zia Tomassina Capozzi welcomed her into their home as a "daughter" for many months and years that followed. Grazia loved them and their family dearly and would often recollect her experiences and those of her brothers (Sam and Donato) with them. In the years that followed Grazia and Donato sponsored other family members to come to Canada and live with them until they were settled. Grazia will be remembered as a kind and caring person, calm and wise while living her life with grace and respect for others. She loved her family and encouraged us to be good people, to treat others with respect and to enjoy life. She enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, dancing and spent many years with the church community. Grazia later joined the Golden Age group at St. John Bosco Catholic church where she and our Dad together with our aunts and uncles would attend parties, bingo nights, cabane a sucre outings and more with extended family and friends.
The family would like to thank those who provided Grazia with excellent care and compassion throughout her time at the CHSLD in St. Henri - the doctors, nurses, and all the wonderful staff. We give a special heartfelt thank you to Maria Rodrigues, who was our mom's main caregiver for the past seven years and also to Goreti Santos, both for their personal care of our mom throughout the years.
To express your condolences, please join us on Thursday January 25th at St. John Bosco Catholic Church located at 2510 Springland St. Montreal, Quebec from 9:45 am and a mass will follow at 11:00 am. The cemetery is Notre-Dame-des-Neiges located at 4601 Chemin de la Cote-des-Neiges, Montreal, Quebec and the Mausoleum is Sainte - Marguerite d'Youville.
