Mark the passing on December 21, 2025, of Dr. Mohammed Haroon, Ph.D. Agronomy; C.P. Ag. Born: October 13, 1939, in Dundee, Mahaicony, Guyana.
After completing high school and passing several GCE “O” levels, he joined the Ministry of Agriculture as an extension agent. From 1960-65, he was assigned as a Technical Assistant on a joint FAO/Ministry of Agriculture soil survey project in Guyana. From 1965 to 1975, he completed university studies, B.Sc. in Soil Science (1969) at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C., USA. He was presented by the Plant Food Institute, N.C., and VA., Inc., the Trophy Cup Award of “Agronomy Club Senior, Highest Scholastic Average, N.C. State University, 1968-69”. He completed his M.Sc. in Crop Science (1971) at the same university and his Ph.D. in Agronomy (1975), University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. He immigrated to Quebec, Canada, in September 1975 and became a citizen in 1978.
Dr. Haroon had a career in international development with long-term contracts, first in Rwanda, then in Haiti, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC), and then in Cameroon and Tanzania. His last contract before retirement was in Rajasthan, India, the country from which his paternal and maternal grandparents were taken as indentured workers to Guyana. Dr. Haroon’s father died when he was 10 years old, and his widowed mother raised all 11 children, plus three street boys whom she took in and treated them like her own children. A few months ago, Dr. Haroon wrote a short piece honouring his mother’s life and concluded by saying that her life can best be described by paraphrasing Paul Anka:
“…Yes, there were times I am sure she knew
When she bit off more than she could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
She ate it up and spit it out
She faced it all and stood tall
Add did it her way”.
Dr. Haroon was born on the mud floor of a mud house in Dundee, in his beloved country of birth, Guyana. He will rest for eternity under a maple tree in Quebec, Canada, the country of adoption, which he fell in love with. He would like all his dear nieces and nephews to embrace their origins and to remember, as they are all pursuing lives of great achievements around the world, that a lot of good things came out of Guyanese mud as gifts to the world.
Dr. Haroon wanted the family to extend their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Dialysis unit of Hôpital St-Mary's for their support and care.
The family will receive condolences on January 3, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Yves Légaré Funeral Complex LaSalle, located at 7200 Newman Boulevard, LaSalle, QC, H8N 1X2.
