MARY SWIDERSKI
September 13, 1953 - February 14, 2024
Mary Swiderski passed away peacefully in Montréal, Québec, on February 14, 2026, at the age of 72. On her final journey into God's eternal grace, she was lovingly surrounded by family.
Born in 1953 to Carmela Lono and Jan Swiderski, Mary attended Victor-Doré, a French school dedicated to children with special needs. At the age of eight, Mary received one of the first Ileal conduits for children in Québec, a revolutionary surgery for its time, which enabled her to attend a school for the general public. Mary completed several years of high school education in French at Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil and finished grade eleven in English at James Lyng High School; thereafter, the Dawson College Nursing Program welcomed Mary as a student. After she graduated in 1975, Mary became a registered nurse and worked for thirty-four years at the Montréal General Hospital on Cedar Avenue. A highlight for Mary was working with Mrs. Anita Mountjoy. In Mary's words, ''Mrs. Mountjoy taught me many valuable lessons that served me in my career.''
Mary was predeceased by her father, Jan (1971), her mother, Carmela (1993), her sister, Ann Linda (1946), her brother, Eddy (1961), and her brother, Johnny (2024). Mary endured several health challenges during her lifetime. She was our family hero, an ordinary person who overcame extraordinary challenges with courage and forbearance. Her life was marked by love for her family, by serving the frail and sick at the Montréal General Hospital, by perseverance, generosity, decency, and great affection for her pet cat Shadow.
Mourning her loss are her brother, Sandy (Rachela Wysotzki), her sister, Wanda (Nick De Pinto), her nephew, Thomas (Heather Allen), her great-nephew, Zachary, her uncle, Armand Lono (Lise), several cousins and their families, Nick's sister, Carmela De Pinto, members of the Novielli and Blanchette families, and other extended family members and friends, especially her friend of fifty years, Manon Beauregard.
Visitations will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at the Yves Légaré (Alfred Dallaire) Funeral Complex, 7200 Newman Blvd., LaSalle, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The following morning at 10:00 a.m., a private service in Mary's honour will be held for the immediate family only at the Yves Légaré Complex. The burial will take place in the spring at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank several staff members of the MUHC (Montréal General Hospital, Cedar Avenue) and at the MUHC (Glen site). Over the years, Mary benefited from the skills of physicians who sustained and healed her as she experienced significant health issues. Instrumental in her care, past and present, were: Dr. M. Laplante, Dr. S. Tanguay, Dr. D. Mulder, Dr. M. Tewfik, Dr. B. Unikowsky, Dr. M. Vasilevsky, Dr. S. Soldera, and especially Dr. Arielle Mendel, who worked tirelessly to support Mary's health in the final years. It is with gratitude that we also acknowledge the great care of the Palliative Care team at the Glen during Mary's final days, especially Dr. Karin Fink, medical student, Aimen, and all the nursing staff. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mary's memory to the MUHC Foundation or a charity of your choice.
