Maria Tzouvelakos (née Arvanitakis) peacefully passed away at the remarkable age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and resilience. A true pillar of her family, she bridged generations and continents with her unwavering strength and devotion.
Maria was the beloved wife of Peter, who predeceased her after more than 55 years of a partnership exemplifying commitment and love. She cherished her role as a mother to her daughter, Angie (George Tsimiklis), and her son, Johnny. As a grandmother, Maria shared a special bond with her grandsons, Costa and Peter, who brought immense joy to her life. Her home was a second home for them, filled with the comforting aroma of her cooking and the warmth of her presence. Family trips to Greece and countless sleepovers were filled with simple moments that kept her family close.
Born in Amaliada, Ilias, Greece, Maria was the only daughter among five siblings, predeceased by her beloved brothers: Dionisios (Eugenia), Costa (Maria), Ioannis (Maria), and Jimmy (Angie). She leaves behind her loving sister-in-law, Angie (Jimmy), who was more than family-she was the sister Maria never had and her dearest friend. Their bond began when Angie arrived in Canada, living together and supporting each other through life’s joys and challenges. Their families grew up side by side, creating a lifetime of shared memories. Angie became like a second mother to Angie and Johnny, remaining by Maria’s side until the very end, embodying the truest form of sisterhood.
Maria’s strength and resilience were matched by her optimism. Her Greek Orthodox faith was central to her life; she attended mass every Sunday, celebrated holidays with joy, and remained deeply connected to her heritage. As one of the founding members of the Greek Orthodox Community of LaSalle, she dedicated countless hours to church and Greek Community fundraisers, generously giving of her time and spirit.
Her home was the heart of the family-a gathering place where generations came together. Family dinners, holiday meals, and spontaneous visits were centered around her kitchen, where stories were told, laughter echoed, and love was served daily-right up to her 94th birthday this past March.
Maria's legacy is one of love, kindness, and deep family values. As we remember her, we celebrate a life well-lived-filled with grace, strength, and countless cherished moments. Her spirit will resonate in the hearts of all who knew her.
She will be dearly missed by her cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends across Greece, Australia, the United States, and Canada. Maria had a rare gift for building lasting connections, leaving a lasting mark on everyone she encountered.
We, the family, wish to express our deepest gratitude to Maria’s doctors at the Cedars Cancer Centre for their compassionate care and unwavering support. We extend our thanks to the entire team at the CLSC LaSalle for their kindness during each visit and home care appointment. Most especially, we are grateful to the extraordinary staff at Maison Sault-Saint-Louis Pour Soins Palliatifs, whose compassion and gentle care provided comfort to Maria and solace to our family during her final days.
Family will receive condolences on Wednesday, May 28th from 4pm-9pm at Yves Legare Funeral Complexe 7200 boul Newman, Lasalle. A funeral service will be held on Thursday,May 29th at 1:30pm at St-Dionysios Greek Orthodox Church 7707 Blvd. LaSalle, Lasalle, Quebec H8P 1Y5.
Memorial donations in honor of Maria may be made to the Cedars Cancer Foundation, or to Maison Sault-Saint-Louis Pour Soins Palliatifs.
